The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is a fourth-generation video game console developed by Nintendo. It was first released in Japan on November 21, 1990 as the Super Famicom, and in North America on August 23, 1991. The second cartridge-based home console in the Nintendo family, it succeeded the Nintendo Entertainment System and preceded the Nintendo 64.
The Super Nintendo controller introduced two features that became standard in later gamepads: two shoulder buttons (L and R) positioned for the index fingers, and a diamond-shaped arrangement of four face buttons (A, B, X, and Y).
