Xbox 360 controller tactile guide
The Xbox 360 controller is a traditional two-handed gamepad. It was available in wired and wireless versions.
Left grip
The left thumb rests on the left thumbstick, while the left index finger rests on the LT trigger. The LT trigger is pressure-sensitive.
The thumbstick can be clicked by pressing it downward. It has a circular depression where the thumb can rest, with small raised bumps at the top, bottom, left, and right. On the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller with Transforming D-pad, these small raised directional bumps are absent.
The D-pad is diagonally down and to the right from the left thumbstick. It is a raised, circular control with a cross-shaped directional surface.
On the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller with Transforming D-pad, the D-pad has a chrome finish and can be transformed by pinching it with two fingers and twisting it clockwise or counter-clockwise. In the transformed position, the cross-shaped D-pad is more pronounced and raised. When the D-pad is raised higher, it is in the transformed position. When it is relatively flat and the other parts of the circular control can be felt, it is not transformed.
Right grip
The right thumb rests on the A button, while the right index finger rests on the RT trigger.
The RT trigger is pressure-sensitive.
The right thumbstick is below and to the left of the action buttons. It has a circular depression where the thumb can rest, with small raised bumps at the top, bottom, left, and right. It can be clicked by pressing it downward. On the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller with Transforming D-pad, these small raised directional bumps are absent.
The four action buttons are arranged in a diamond. B is diagonally up and to the right from A, X is diagonally up and to the left from A, and Y is directly above A.
Center
The Back button is to the right of the left thumbstick. The word "BACK" is marked above and to the left of the button, and a left-pointing triangle is marked on the button.
The Start button is to the left of the X button. The word "START" is marked above and to the right of the button, and a right-pointing triangle is marked on the button.
The Guide button is between the Back and Start buttons. The numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 are marked around the Guide button, with 1 at the upper-left, 2 at the upper-right, 3 at the lower-left, and 4 at the lower-right. The Guide button lights up when the controller is powered on. The Guide button is raised and has the shape of the Xbox 360 logo. Some Guide buttons either have a chrome or non-reflective finish.
Top edge
Above LT is LB, and above RT is RB. LB and RB click when pressed.
The LT, LB, RT, and RB buttons are marked with their respective designations. The markings are tactile and can be felt.
On wireless controllers, the Sync button is to the right of LB.
The wired controller has a cable extending from the top edge instead of the wireless controller's battery and wireless connection system.
On wireless controllers, a charging port is located to the right of the Sync button when using the Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit.
Above the charging port is a tactile logo marked on the plastic. On standard Xbox 360 controllers, the logo reads "Microsoft." On controllers with the Transforming D-pad, the logo reads "Xbox 360."
Front edge and underside
The accessory jack is centered along the front edge of the controller.
Wireless controllers have a removable battery cover on the underside. A release button is built into the battery cover and can be pressed to remove it. The battery compartment holds two AA batteries.
Wired controllers do not have a battery compartment or wireless Sync button.
