PlayStation 3 controller tactile guide
For the base button layout, see DualShock 2.
This page describes the physical and tactile features of the official controllers for the PlayStation 3.
SIXAXIS
The SIXAXIS is a revision of the DualShock 2 for the PlayStation 3. It retains the same general button layout but adds motion sensing functionality and removes vibration functionality. It can be used with a wired or wireless connection.
Top edge
The controller has a USB Mini-B port in place of the cable that extends from the older PlayStation controllers.
The USB logo is marked above the port.
To the right of the USB logo is the "SIXAXIS" marking. The marking is not tactile and cannot be felt.
To the left of the USB logo are four player indicator lights. Each indicator is a small square and lights up when the controller is powered on. Depending on the order in which controllers are connected, one indicator lights up solid to indicate the current player. The indicator squares are tactile.
The numbers associated with the player indicators are arranged from left to right as 4, 3, 2, and 1. The numbers are not tactile and cannot be felt.
Center
The "PlayStation" text marking, PlayStation logo marking, and Analog button are removed.
The Select and Start buttons retain their shapes and positions. The "SELECT" and "START" markings are moved above their respective buttons instead of below them.
The PS button replaces the Analog button. It is diagonally down and to the left from the Start button and diagonally down and to the right from the Select button.
The PS button is round and has a glossy surface similar to the action buttons.
Back
The controller information is printed on a sticker. Unlike the older PlayStation controllers, the sticker does not provide a tactile landmark.
Above and to the right of the sticker is a small reset button. The button is recessed and requires a small object, such as a pushpin or paperclip, to be inserted and pressed.
DualShock 3
The DualShock 3 retains the same general button layout and tactile features as the SIXAXIS. It adds vibration functionality.
Top edge
The "SIXAXIS" marking is moved downward to make room for the "DUALSHOCK 3" marking above it. Neither marking is tactile and neither can be felt.
