PlayStation 3
The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a seventh-generation video game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released in Japan on November 11, 2006. The third console in the PlayStation family, it succeeded the PlayStation 2 and preceded the PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 3 uses Blu-ray discs for its games and can also play Blu-ray movies, DVDs, and audio CDs. It was the first console to use Blu-ray as its primary game format. All models have a user-upgradeable hard drive, built-in Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 ports, and HDMI output. Wi-Fi is built into all models except the original 20 GB model. The console also has an internal hard drive that stores save data, downloaded games, and other content.
Backwards compatibility varies by model. All PlayStation 3 consoles can play original PlayStation games through software emulation. Early models can also play PlayStation 2 games, but later models removed this feature. Saves are stored on the console's hard drive or on a compatible USB storage device. The console does not use memory cards like the PlayStation 2.
The PlayStation 3 initially shipped with the Sixaxis controller, which introduced motion sensing but lacked rumble. It was succeeded by the DualShock 3 in 2008, which restored vibration feedback while keeping the motion sensing. The PlayStation 3 also supported Bluetooth for wireless controllers and headsets. A later firmware update added closed captioning support for Blu-ray and DVD playback on North American models.[1]
