PlayStation 5

From Accessible Gaming Wiki

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a ninth-generation video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was first released worldwide on November 12, 2020. The fifth console in the PlayStation family, it succeeded the PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 uses Blu-ray discs for its games and can also play 4K UHD Blu-ray movies, standard Blu-ray movies, DVDs, and audio CDs. A second model, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, does not have a disc drive. A later revision reduced the size and weight of both models. The console has a built-in solid-state drive, built-in Wi-Fi 6, gigabit Ethernet, USB-C and USB-A ports, and HDMI 2.1 output. Video output supports up to 8K resolution and 120 Hz refresh rates on compatible displays.

The PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible with most PlayStation 4 games, both physical and digital. Some PlayStation 4 games receive performance improvements when played on PlayStation 5. The console does not support native backwards compatibility with PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or original PlayStation discs. Some older games are available through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog as digital re-releases.

The PlayStation 5 introduced the DualSense controller, which added adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and a built-in microphone. It retained the touch pad, light bar, and speaker from the DualShock 4.

In 2023, Sony released the Access controller, a first-party adaptive controller designed for players with disabilities. It supports swappable button and stick caps, adjustable stick length, configurable button mappings, and four 3.5mm expansion ports for additional switches.[1]

The PlayStation 5 includes several system-level accessibility features. These include a screen reader, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, button remapping, zoom, high contrast mode, and color filters. The console also supports closed captions for system menus and compatible media.[2]
