PlayStation (console)

From Accessible Gaming Wiki

For the 2018 dedicated mini console, see PlayStation Classic.

The PlayStation (abbreviated as PS, commonly known as the PS1 or its codename PSX) is a fifth-generation video game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released in Japan on December 3, 1994, and in North America on September 9, 1995. The first console in the PlayStation family, it preceded the PlayStation 2. It used CD-ROMs for its games and could also play audio CDs. Save data was stored on PlayStation Memory Cards, which were sold separately. A smaller, redesigned model called the PSone was released in 2000.

The PlayStation control pad was the first gamepad to feature two pairs of shoulder buttons, positioned for the index and middle fingers.
